How You Can Get Paid To Travel?

Traveling the world can seem expensive and out of reach but what if you could travel to a new and exciting place while getting paid to do it. Luckily in 2019, it's easier than ever to find jobs abroad so you can get paid while you explore. I've traveled for over two years full time and this is the number one question I receive so I've compiled a list of 9 jobs that will pay you to travel.

1. Turn your hobby into a career:

Have you ever considered being your own boss doing something you love? Rather than being employed by a company, freelancers are self-employed and must find work and clients on their own. Freelancing is a great way to travel and earn money on your own terms. It is not easy work, it takes a lot of discipline to push yourself to get the jobs done but it is possible. There are many sites such as Fiverr, upwork, and remoters that allow you to get started doing virtual jobs as a freelancer. These sites enable you to be a virtual assistant, financial consultant, translator, photo or video editor, graphic designer, video game creator, social media manager, and hundreds more. All you need to get started is a laptop and a strong wifi connection.

Freelancing is one of the ways that I am paid to travel the world. I turned my love for photography, videography, and social media marketing into a career where I create content for brands and companies around the world. In other words, I get paid to take photos and videos for clothing brands, hotels, and travel companies I also started my own tour company. The best part of being a freelancer is you choose your own hours, prices, and of course where in the world you work from. I've also met tons of people who decided to become a full-time YouTubers, photographers, bloggers, consultant, and makeup artist. Everyone has a skill or hobby that they can turn into a career whether you're good at writing, personal training, fixing cars, or cooking. There will always be a way to make money with your skills, you just need to find out what you're good at and research ways to get money doing it.

2. Work and Holiday Visa:

If you want to work and live in another country I highly recommend a Work and Holiday Visa. These visas are usually for people age 18-30 year old. The visa allows you to live, work, and study in a different country legally for 6 months to 3 years. If you are American you can apply for a visa in Australia, New Zeland, Singapore, South Korea, and Ireland. Each country's requirements differ but it is a great idea if you are looking to immerse yourself in a new culture and travel long term.

I currently hold an Australian Work and Holiday Visa. The Australian Work and Holiday visa is the most common and easiest visit to get. This visa allows you to work and live in Australia for 1-3 years. It cost me $332 (USD) to apply for the visa online and I was approved within 1 hour of applying which meant I could pack my bags and head to Australia immediately. After applying for the visa you have 1 year to enter Australia. They do recommend that you should have at least $3,500 (USD) before coming so you can support yourself before you find work however in most cases they dont check to see how much you have.(They did'nt for me). I chose Australia because I loved it so much when I came for the first time and it was a great place to make and save money. The minimum wage in NSW is currently $19.49(AUD) an hour and depending on what job you choose you can get paid tons more. It's also great because you can choose which job you want. You can find and apply for Australian jobs on sites like Gumtree, Seek, and Indeed. I currently live in Sydney and work for free accommodation so it makes it very easy for me to save and travel. I picked up a part time sales job making $22-$35 an hour and it took me just one week to find the job.

3. Teach English Abroad:

So many countries around the world are looking for English teachers. In most cases, you have to apply for an ESL or TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) teaching certificate before applying for a job, its easy and can be done online. Once you have the certificate you have the opportunity to teach English online or abroad in countries that don't speak English as their first language. Some companies in countries that are in need of English teachers such as Asia or UAE might be willing to give you free room and board, cover your flight, and pay you to teach. Other countries such as Spain or Italy require you to cover your own cost but will pay you for teaching. You usually don't need a ton of experience to apply for teaching jobs and in most cases you don't even need to know how to speak the native language of the country you choose. One of my amazing friend and fellow travel blogger @herwanderdiary just went to China to teach English for a year and loves it. Keep in mind that requirements to teach and what you get paid vary depending on where you apply.

9. Keep Your Job:

While the idea of quitting your current job to travel the world sounds dreamy it might not be for everyone especially if you work in a job that you actually love. Instead, if you work for an international company you can ask your boss if they have offices in other countries and request a transfer. If you get transferred you will get to keep your job and move to a new location abroad. However most jobs don't actually need to be done in an office especially if the work involves working online so you can also consider talking to your boss about working remotely.

I have friends like @sam.thealchemist who were able to ask if they could work remotely (from home or abroad). Sam is a social media marketer based in an office in Los Angeles. After working with the company for a year he decided to request "remote work". He was able to keep his job and take a laptop from work with all the software he needed available and travel. We traveled abroad together for several months, he scheduled out a few hours a day to work from home than would have the rest of the day to explore the country we were in. He could skype his team if there was a meeting he needed to attend, and he would communicate with everyone through email. It might seem daunting to talk to your boss about wanting to travel more but it can also be completely rewarding if they say yes. :)
